Description

Maria Theresia Taler (Münze Österreich)

The Maria Theresa Taler is a silver coin that has been in use globally since 1741. This coin was named after the Empress Maria Theresa, the first woman to rule over the Habsburg Monarchy. The production of this silver coin was started by the statute issued by the Empress. The existing coins, as well as new editions, have been crafted continuously since 1857.  Originally issued in 1780, the year of Maria Theresa’s death, the coin exhibits the Empress in her later years on its front, while the back of the coin depicts the imperial crown flanked by a pair of eagle heads above a shield covered in different coats of arms. Although a legal tender in Austria until 1858, in many African countries the Maria Theresa Taler was officially in use until the end of World War II.
